Everybody say YEAH! Kinky Boots ist the new hit on Londons West End. Adapted from the movie from 2005, Kinky Boots tells the true story of Charlie Price, who inherits his father shoe factory in Northampton. To safe the factory, Charlie tries to find a new niche market – with a little help on drag queen Lola: the Kinky Boots are born.

After a massive success on Broadway – including six Tony Awards – the musical now opened at the Adelphi theatre in August. As I was in London during reviews, I just had to take my chance and see it. So I set my alarm for an early morning and joined the day seat queue. Day Senats during previews were 15 pounds – they’re 25 pounds now after the official opening, which is a normal day seat price in London. So, for a bargain price I sat down in third row the same night – and absolutely loved it!

Music and lyrics were written by Cindy Lauper, who I think did an excellent job. I hardly ever left a show with multiple songs stuck in my head at the same time. Harvey Fierstein’s book is close to the movie and I noticed lines from the movie in both lyrics and dialogues. Final piece of the creative team is choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who I knew from his work on the musical version of Legally Blonde.

The whole ensemble is fantastic but star of the show has to be Matt Henry as drag queen Lola, who not only makes dancing around in 6 inch heels look like nothing, he also sounds incredible – as does Killian Donnelly as Charlie, especially when he smashed Soul of a Man in the second act. Amy Lennox as factory worker Lauren is hilarious, the whole ensemble as I said is fantastic. Lola’s Angels – wow. Just wow!

Kinky Boots is a colourful, loud, funny feel-good show about love, acceptance and… the most beautiful thing in the world: shoes. I absolutely loved this show and this will not have been my last visit to the Adelphi. If you enjoyed Legally Blonde, I dare to say you will also enjoy Kinky Boots. If you like modern pop songs, you’ll like Kinky Boots. And if you’re not sure: go and see it anyway. I’ll link the official trailer for the London production, which right now is scheduled to run at the Adelphi theatre until 6th February 2016.
