A few weeks ago I went on a short trip to Berlin with two friends – we went to see Tanz der Vampire, which just reopened at the Theater des Westens. We arrived in Berlin at around 11 am and our train back was scheduled to leave at 11:45 pm the same day – so plenty of time to walk around the capital city, especially because it was a beautiful sunny day. Of course 12 hours is a very short time for a city trip – to feel the vibe, discover all the important places and get a sense of a city. But you can still go and see all the sights that tourist guides list to see and in Berlin you can even get that done by foot in the short amount of time.

So today I’ll give you the little sightseeing-walking tour we did if you want to discover Berlin within a day.Weiterlesen …

We start the tour at Berlin main station. If you travel to the capital city with DeutscheBahn, this is most likely the point where your train arrives. From there it is only a short walk to the Reichskanzleramt and the Reichstag – our first stops on our sightseeing tour.

We continue our walk towards the Brandenburger Tor – probably one of the most famous sights of Berlin.

Afterwards we made our way towards Alexanderplatz. We stopped at the Memorial of the Murdered Jews and made our way to the Museumsinsel, passed the Berlin Cathedral Church and ended up at the Fernsehturm, which by the way is the tallest structure in Germany. Alexanderplatz is just across the street and is where you can find the famous Worldtime Clock.

If you don’t have a show to catch, you can then walk back towards Tiergarten and stop at Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdamer Platz and the Sony Center.

We hopped on a train at Alexanderplatz and went to Zoologischer Garten, which is just a short train ride. The Theater des Westens is located just around the corner and was the first theatre in Germany to show musicals. At 2:30 pm we sat down in this beautiful theatre for three hours at the crypt with Alfred, Sarah and the Count. 😉

Furthermore the Theater des Westens is not far from the Kurfürstendamm – one of the most famous avenues in Berlin and great for dining and shopping. After a dinner stop at Vapiano we continue our sightseeing tour and make our way to the Siegessäule in the middle of Tiergarten. From there it is only a short walk to Schloss Bellevue, which is the official residence of the Bundespräsident.

If you’re as lucky as we were with the glorious sunshine, this is the time to enjoy a stroll along the Spree and slowly make your way back to the main station.
