Something Rotten takes you back to Renaissance England at the end of the 16th century where brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom take on The Bard himself and end up writing the first musical ever.

The show opened in Broadway last year and the original score has so many show references that I lost count during the show! Since the Tony performance last year I have been dying to see the show so when we booked our trip to New York I knew this would definitely be on my list.

I absolutely loved this show! The songs are brilliant and the staging of the musical numbers is incredible – the scenes between numbers sometimes seemed a little flat compared to the songs, but still had some hilarious lines in them.

I loved Brian d’Arcy James as Nick Bottom and the connection with John Cariani and Eric Sciotto (I saw two shows – one with John, who’s the 1st Cast, and one with Eric, who’s the understudy) as his brother Nigel was brilliant. Heidi Blickenstaff as Bae was amazing – I wish they hadn’t cut out the number with Bae and Portia, I would’ve loved to hear more of Heidi.

And finally… I have to admit, I had a little fangirl moment when he first got on stage. I always wanted to see him life since they broadcast the Broadway version of Legally Blonde on MTV “back in the day” and I wasn’t disappointed. Christian Borle seems to have a ball as the rockstar that is William Shakespeare in this show and I thought he was brilliant!

Overall – the whole show was brilliant. It must have been – I went back to see it again the next day. The plot is not extremely profound, but it’s everything I love about musical theatre. Big dance numbers, great costumes, great songs and all the show references had me in stitches for basically the entire 2 1/2 hours. If I could, I’d definitely go and see it again! And if you’re looking for a fun show – go and see it! I’m still praying for a West End transfer by the way…
